We’re excited to announce that we’ve added another amazing member to the Mailroom Staff. Meet our new barber, Bethany Lloyd! We’re so lucky to have her on the team. Check out our interview with Bethany below and read about her experience with mens haircuts and get to know her a little bit better.
How long have you been doing hair?
About 5 years, give or take.
What’s your favorite thing about cutting/doing someone’s hair?
This is kind of a two-part answer for me. I really like seeing the positive change in someone’s attitude from getting a quality cut or style. I also really enjoy being able to artistically express myself in that process. The combination of artistic expression and providing a service that can change someone’s self-perception in a positive way is what makes me love what I do.
What’s your favorite style to create?
Short to medium cuts that are easy to push back and maintain a textured, slightly “messy” look. I also enjoy styles that work well with a beard.
What is your favorite product to use when styling your client’s hair?
I really like the Mailroom’s medium-hold natural pomade. It works well on any type of hair and the smell of pipe tobacco just puts it over the top.
What’s something your clients may not know about you that you’d like to share?
I can have a dry, sarcastic sense of humor sometimes.
If you were a type of beer, what brew would you be and why?
I’d be an Amber Ale. It has that deep auburn color, it’s flavorful but not too sweet, good for any occasion but enjoyed best in the Fall.
What makes you feel fully alive? A hobby, a moment? Maybe you have a memory of a time you felt that way. Maybe it’s a mood.
I feel most centered when I’m a part of something larger than myself, specifically in vast nature settings. When I’m on a mountaintop or staring at the ocean or surrounded by huge trees. Being in those settings takes all of my stress and heaviness away. It’s when I feel the most still and the most at peace. I’m able to just be. That’s what makes me feel most alive.
What’s or who is your spirit animal?
Jude, my 3-year-old son.
Where are you from?
A lot of places, but Virginia is where my roots grew.
Can you tell us a little bit about your family?
They’re lovely. I’m married to Joshua, my firstborn is Jude, and I’m currently cooking boy number two (who will be here in February). We also have the greatest oaf of an Old English Sheepdog – Jax. They’re all just really, really great.
If we looked at your iTunes frequently played playlist, which songs would be in your top 5?
This can change depending on the week, but when I answered this question my top 5 was:
1) Brandi Carlile – Every Time I Hear that Song
2) Vulfpeck – Back Pocket
3) Matt Corby – Resolution
4) Tyler the Creator – See You Again
5) Lake Street Dive – Hell Yeah
There you have it! These questions barely scratch the surface with our new barber and friend, Bethany, so take some time and get to know her! You can book an appointment with Bethany online the same way you book with our other barbers.
Stop by The Mailroom this week and say hello! You’ll be glad you did.
Most people think growing a beard is low maintenance. You just let it grow, leave it alone, and it's all good -- right? Wrong! Along the way, moisturizing your beard is key to getting through the awkward, itchy phase.
