It's time to get rid of that 4 (or 5, or 6) blade razor.
Like most people, I've always hated shaving. It felt like no matter what I tried, the result was always the same -- terrible razor burn and ingrown hairs. Little did I know that my razor was the problem.
Razors with multiple blades popular for a reason -- they're usually easy to use and give you a "close" shave. But easy doesn't always mean good and a that multi-blade is bad for your skin.
That's why we suggest a single blade razor, specifically a safety razor.
Single blade razors, like the safety razor or the straight razor, have a bit of a learning curve but if you start using one you'll never want to go back to that "5-blade-mach-18-super-shaver-combo-deluxe" ever again.
When you use a multi-blade razor, the first blade lifts the hair and the second blade cuts it. As it’s released, it drops back under the skin because it isn’t long enough to poke through anymore. This may sound great if you want your face to feel completely smooth, but the hairs that don’t push back through the skin turn into ingrown hairs or infections.
The remaining blades after the first two end up scraping your skin more than it can handle, leaving your face is dry and irritated.
The same can also happen when you shave "against the grain," which is why we only shave with the grain (or growth pattern) in the barbershop (unless specifically requested otherwise). There's an old adage that says barbers give the closest shaves. Yes, we can give the closest shave, but our main goal is to give you a comfortable shave. If your face can handle a shave against the grain we have no problem giving a close shave, but for most people that would have painful results.
If you're totally new to single blade shaving, a safety razor is the way to go. Not only will your shave experience be better, but you’ll save hundreds of dollars a year on razor blades. Safety razor blades are around 10 bucks for a pack of 100.
Compare that to your multi-blade razor and you’ll see the difference immediately.
